Who is Advocates for Americans with Disabilities?

Advocates for Americans with Disabilities is a new company that establishes an important presence in Virginia. It seeks out any commercial establishment that is in violation of the (ADA), Americans with Disabilities Act. Our purpose is that such businesses become ADA compliant, meaning fewer physical and mental barriers for people using canes, walkers, and wheelchairs plus those who are blind, etc. This is an extremely important goal, one which we take seriously.

“The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that state and local governments, businesses and non-profit organizations to provide goods, services and programs with disabilities on an an equal basis with the rest of the public.” Some people think that only new construction and alterations need to be accessible and that older facilities are “grandfathered,” but that’s not true. Because the ADA is a civil rights law not a building code, older facilities are more often than not required to be accessible to ensure that people with disabilities have an equal opportunity to participate. See the ADAChecklist for more information.

*Note: We are currently opening non-compliant cases for “Entrances and Approaches” area of the ADA code. If you like, the public can participate with us by reporting the name and address of any business that is not “accessible” for you, does not have adequate handicapped parking, the signs are low or poorly marked and/or there are none or not enough van accessible parking spaces. See below.

We thank you for your support and a big welcome into this important field.
